Facebook Picture
Facebook is the world’s largest social network, with over 500 million users.

Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg in February 2004, initially as an exclusive network for Harvard students. It was a huge hit: in 2 weeks, half of the schools in the Boston area began demanding a Facebook network. Zuckerberg immediately recruited his friends Dustin Moskowitz and Chris Hughes to help build Facebook, and within four months, Facebook added 30 more college networks.

Sibling rivalry? Mark Zuckerberg's sister Randi Zuckerberg quits Facebook

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg's sister Randi has reportedly quit the popular social networking website to start her own company.

After working six years in her younger brother's shadow as Facebook's director of market development, Randi Zuckerberg has resigned from her post to set up her social media company, 'The Guardian' online reported.

Technology bloggers of Silicon Valley are rubbing their hands at the prospect of some sibling rivalry to follow on from the multiple lawsuits that the younger Zuckerberg -- he's 27, she's 29 -- has endured over the parentage of his wildly popular website.
Business analysts wonder what Randi hopes to achieve that she hasn't already done in one of the world's most rapidly expanding companies.

Her new outfit has a name, RtoZ Media, but no publicly defined goal, no employees and no fully functioning website -- yet, the report said.

Randi is unlikely to be planning anything excessively controversial. She appears to have decided to have fun with her money and her instantly recognisable last name to branch out on her own, without doing anything to damage the Facebook brand she worked for so long to help establish, it said.

"I'm proud of what I've done here... but I know I'll be able to do just as much, or more, for Facebook once I'm on the outside," the report quoted as saying her resignation submitted to her younger brother last week.

She said her goal was "to launch my own innovative programming and work with media companies", adding: "Facebook will clearly be a central element in all my projects."

How hackers hijack your Facebook photos

Beware of uploading your pictures on Facebook -- as an Indian origin computer scientist has warned that by doing this you could be helping someone to steal information from your computer.

The scientist created a botnet called Stegobot to show how easy it would be for a crook to hijack Facebook photos to create a secret communication channel that is very difficult to detect.

Like most botnets, Stegobot gains control of computers by tricking users into opening infected email attachments or visiting suspect websites. But rather than contacting the botmasters directly, it piggybacks on the infected user's normal social network activity.

"If one of your friends is a friend of a friend of the botmaster, the information transfers hop by hop within the social network, finally reaching the botmasters," New Scientist quoted Amir Houmansadr, a computer scientist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who worked on the botnet, as saying.

Stegobot takes advantage of a technique called steganography to hide information in picture files without changing their appearance.

The botnet inserts this information into any photo you upload to Facebook, and then waits for one of your friends to look at your profile. They don't even have to click on the photo, as Facebook helpfully downloads files in the background. If your friend is also infected with the botnet than any photo they upload will also pass on the stolen data.

From there, the data will eventually make its way to the account of someone who is also friends with the botmaster, allowing them to extract details on your identity. The botmasters can also send commands to the botnet through the reverse process - uploading a photo with hidden instructions that make their way to infected computers.

"It's scary because it's virtually undetectable," said Shishir Nagaraja of the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, New Delhi, India, who led the project.

How to post on Google+ & Facebook simultaneously

With the entry of Google+, there is a new social network to share your updates and pictures. However, going to each social network's website and updating status is a pain.

A simpler way is to use the Circles feature on Google+. First, go to www.facebook.com/mobile, login to your account and on the right side of the page you will see an option to 'upload via email' .

Underneath the text, you will see your account specific email address - copy it. Next, Open Google+ and go to Circles. Click on add a new Circle and call it 'Facebook Update'.

Click on add a new person and paste yourFacebook account specific email address and save it with any name. Now, whenever you update your status in Google+, simply add this circle in your list and it will automatically post the same status to your Facebook wall as well.

Apple pips Google, Facebook to become No 1 international brand in China

apple1.jpgA year after opening a flagship store here,Apple has a problem that any retailer would envy: The huge 16,000-square-foot space is already too small.

Huge crowds descend the store's glass staircase, only to discover legions of mostly young Chinese crowding around spare displays of Apple's devices. Another Apple Store, four miles away, is also packed.

To cope, Apple says it is now planning a third, even largerShanghai store, as well as dozens of other stores throughout the country. The expansion is driven by customers like Wang Shangyan, a 17-year-old professed Apple maniac.

"I have many Apple products, likeTouch, iPod,iPad 2 andMacBook," Wang said after browsing the Apple Store here this week. "I don't have an iPhone but I'm waiting for the fifth generation. I will come to the Apple Store to buy it; it doesn't matter how much it costs."

Apple says its Chinese outlets - two inBeijing and two in Shanghai - are now the four most heavily trafficked Apple stores in the world. They also generate the most revenue, outselling even the Fifth Avenue Apple Store in New York, which is open around the clock. (Apple plans to open another store in Grand Central Terminal. Analysts say few globalbrands have achieved such a feat in China.

"Apple has done what Google and Facebook cannot do: become No. 1 in China," said John Quelch, former senior associate dean of Harvard Business School and now head of theChina Europe International Business School in Shanghai. "Scarcity sells, and this is the same strategy Apple has used in the US"

Apple's push into China may be important for other reasons: It shows the depth of this country's fast-growing upper middle class.

Foreign brands can absorb another lesson as well. Apple's success shows that with products that are not so easy to counterfeit, Chinese consumers are willing to pay a premium.

The Apple Store, however, is another matter. Last week, an American blogger living in China posted images of what she believed was a fake Apple Store in the southwestern city of Kunming. The store mimicked the Apple decor, right down to the bright blue T-shirts and white tags Apple employees are required to wear.

"It appears the middle class in China is growing faster than Apple's presence," said Charles Wolf, a securities analyst who follows Apple for Needham & Co. "I mean China has taken rip-offs to a new level, pirating Apple Stores themselves. It speaks to the demand for Apple products throughout China."

Apple declined to comment. The company has no authorized store in Kunming, only licensed resellers, which are barred from creating look-alike outlets or even calling themselves an Apple Store.

On Friday, China said its own regulators had begun inspecting electronics stores in Kunming to ensure they comply with the law.

Rack it up to Apple mania, with Chinese characteristics. Scarcity does seem to be feeding the frenzy. Shortages, bottlenecks and delays have created a thriving gray market in Apple products in China, with many consumers paying hefty prices for iPhones or iPads that have been smuggled in from overseas, ahead of the Chinese release date. Apple recently said its bottlenecks had eased.

Last week, Apple reported blockbuster sales and profits in its third quarter, including $3.8 billion in revenue in greater China, which includes Taiwan and Hong Kong. For the first three quarters of Apple's fiscal year, revenue in greater China was $8.8 billion - six times that of a year earlier. Last quarter, Apple may have even generated more revenue in China than Lenovo - the Chinese PC maker that seven years ago acquired IBM's personal computer business, according to a survey by Bloomberg News.

China has become the second-largest market after theUS for apps that run on the smartphone and tablet, according to Distimo, a Dutch company that tracks the popularity of apps. Strong sales of the iPhone and iPad are also helping drive up sales of Apple's other major products, including desktop computers and laptops.

Apple mania has even inspired grass-roots inventors. A year ago, a 22-year-old programmer and his 25-year-old brother introduced what they called the Apple Peel, essentially a case they said helped turn aniPod into a smartphone capable of making calls.

Will rivals do to Google what Facebook did to MySpace?

Will rival search engines do to Google what Facebook did to MySpace?

That's possible after US antitrust regulators last month started investigations against the search engine for abusing its dominant market position, say experts. The US action is the second antitrust investigation against the search engine after the EU launched first such action against Google last year.

"Google's position is more precarious than it first appears. If consumers and advertisers decide that Google's methods are biased or it has dropped the ball, defection to (Microsoft's) Bing or elsewhere could follow rapidly - witness the migration from MySpace to Facebook,'' says Wayne Crews of the Competitive Enterprise Institute in Washington .

Criticizing antitrust investigations against Google, he says in an article in the Vancouver Sun that US action against the search engine will undermine competition.

"Rivals claim that Google manipulates its search results to disfavour competitors' offerings and bolster its own properties. How Google ranks sites or steers traffic is its own prerogative. Yet even if it were to 'unfairly' favour its own properties, it cannot escape the ruthless market consequences of those actions, as competitors would be ready to exploit its folly,'' says Wayne in the article written jointly with Alberto Mingardi , director general of Instituto Bruno Leoni in Milan, Italy.

The authors say government intervention will undermine healthy competition.

"Competing search engines like Microsoft's Bing are gaining ground. Others could be created by alliances among firms, should it come to that. It wasn't long ago that many of us were 'locked in' to the Yahoo and AltaVista search engines. The very emergence of Google would have been impossible if antitrust enforcers' vision of Internet market share were true.''

The authors say if US antitrust investigations create the impression among consumers and advertisers that Google's methods are biased, "defection to Bing or elsewhere could follow rapidly - witness the migration from MySpace to Facebook.''

MySpace was the most popular social networking site till 2008 when Facebook overtook it.

According to the authors, "Google's market power derives from consumers choosing to use it. To forcibly deny that choice is wrong in its own right and short-circuits the competitive process that yields consumer feedback and keeps companies on their toes.''

Google last month received a formal notification from the US Federal Trade Commission ( FTC )) that it has begun a review of its business.

"It's still unclear exactly what the FTC's concerns are, but we are clear about where we stand. Since the beginning, we have been guided by the idea that, if we focus on the user, all else will follow,'' the Mountain View , California-based search engine has said in its reaction to the antitrust notification.

Google is currently the world's second most valuable company after Apple .

Facebook video calling and group chat features launched

FacebookQuick on the heels of Google's launch of its latest social-networking venture, Facebook said Wednesday that its 750 million users will now be able to make video calls on the site.

The feature will be powered by the Internet phone service Skype. Facebook also redesigned its chat feature, so that the people a user messages the most often show up first.

To make video calls, Facebook users with webcam-equipped computers have to select the friends they want to chat with. In the chat window that pops up, clicking on a small blue video icon brings up the video chat feature. Currently there is no option to video chat more than one person. That feature is available on Google Plus, a social service that Google began testing last week with a small number of invited users.

Facebook is also adding a group chat option. This works much the same way as the group chat on Google Plus. Once you are chatting with one friend, you can click an icon to add more people to the conversation.

Facebook's new products come after a relatively quiet period for the world's largest online social network. Zuckerberg, 26, said the company is embarking on ``launching season 2011.'' Users can expect ``a lot of stuff coming out'' from Facebook in the next couple of weeks and months, he said at an event at the company's Palo Alto, Calif., headquarters.

Facebook updated its user count _ to 750 million users worldwide _ for the first time since last summer, when it reached half a billion people. Zuckerberg said that's because ``we don't think it's a metric to watch anymore.''

Rather, Facebook is paying more attention to how much its users are sharing with one another. That number is growing at a much faster rate than its monthly user base. Currently, people share 4 billion items, such as photos, status updates and links, every day using Facebook.

Without mentioning Google by name, Zuckerberg said that ``independent entrepreneurs and companies focused on one particular thing will always do better than companies that try to do everything.''

For Facebook, that one thing has been creating an online social infrastructure that other companies, such as Skype, can then add their own products to.

Skype has agreed to be bought by Microsoft Corp. for $8.5 billion in a deal expected to close by the end of the year. Microsoft owns a small stake in Facebook.

The Demise of Facebook in March this Year

PALO ALTO, CA –Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will be shut down in March. Managing the site has become too stressful.

“Facebook has gotten out of control,” said Zuckerberg in a press conference outside his Palo Alto office, “and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness.”

Zuckerberg went on to explain that starting March 15th, users will no longer be able to access their Facebook accounts.

“After March 15th the whole website shuts down,” said Avrat Humarthi, Vice President of Technical Affairs at Facebook. “So if you ever want to see your pictures again, I recommend you take them off the internet. You won’t be able to get them back after Facebook goes out of business.”

Zuckerberg said the decision to shut down Facebook was difficult, but that he does not think people will be upset.

“I personally don’t think it’s a big deal,” he said in a private phone interview. “And to be honest, I think it’s for the better. Without Facebook, people will have to go outside and make real friends. That’s always a good thing.”

Some Facebook users were furious upon hearing the shocking news.

“What am I going to do without Facebook?” said Denise Bradshaw, a high school student from Indiana. “My life revolves around it. I’m on Facebook at least 10 hours a day. Now what am I going to do with all that free time?”

However, parents across the country have been experiencing a long anticipated sense of relief.

“I’m glad the Facebook nightmare is over,” said Jon Guttari, a single parent from Detroit. “Now my teenager’s face won’t be glued to a computer screen all day. Maybe I can even have a conversation with her.”

Those in the financial industry are criticizing Zuckerberg for walking away from a multibillion dollar franchise. Facebook is currently ranked as one of the wealthiest businesses in the world, with economists estimating its value at around 7.9 billion.

But Zuckerberg remains unruffled by these accusations. He said he will stand by his decision to give Facebook the axe.

“I don’t care about the money,” said Zuckerberg. “I just want my old life back.”

The Facebook Corporation suggests that users remove all of their personal information from the website before March 15th. After that date, all photos, notes, links, and videos will be permanently erased.

Facebook founder Zuckerberg is No. 1 page on Google(PLUS)

Any guesses as to who is the most popular person on Google(PLUS), the company's new social networking service? Ashton Kutcher , perhaps? Or Lady Gaga?

Actually, that title is currently held by Mark Zuckerberg , the founder and chief executive of Facebook - the very service that Google(PLUS) was meant to challenge.

As of Tuesday evening, Zuckerberg had nearly 35,000 people following his updates on the service, more than anyone else in a broad survey of Google(PLUS) profiles by Social Statistics, an outside service. His fan base exceeds that of Larry Page , one of the founders of Google and its recently appointed chief executive, who had only 24,000 people following him.

Facebook also has the world's biggest map of the connections between people. It is not possible to transfer data about one's Facebook connections into Google(PLUS), so most users will have to rebuild that list on the new service. On Tuesday, Facebook blocked an add-on for Google's Chrome browser that was created by an outside programmer and gave people a way to import their Facebook contacts into services like Google(PLUS). Facebook said the add-on violated the company's terms of service.

Google is hoping to bring its new social network to the iPhone and iPad through applications it has submitted to Apple. In the past, Apple has let apps created by Google linger in limbo, without approving or rejecting them.

So far, Google's new social service has generated positive comments from those with early access, in a turnabout from Google's earlier attempts to woo the masses with social services like Wave and Buzz, which were met with lackluster responses and concerns over privacy.

Stephen Shankland , a writer for the technology news service CNet, said that Circles, a feature that lets people sort their friends into groups for more private sharing, was "the biggest improvement, far and away, over Facebook."

Adam Pash , a blogger at Lifehacker, described the service's Hangout feature, which lets people video chat with as many as 10 friends simultaneously, as "the best free video chat we've seen."

"The other 600 million members of Facebook are already heavily invested in Facebook and their FarmVille farms," Owyang said.

Facebook says it is not worried about the competition.

"We're in the early days of making the Web more social, and there are opportunities for innovation everywhere," said Jonny Thaw , a spokesman for the company.
